Overview

The Department of Ophthalmology is staffed by thirteen consultant ophthalmic surgeons and is the largest department of its kind in the country.

All the major ophthalmic subspecialties are catered for. Consultants have joint appointments with St Vincent’s University Hospital, St Michael’s Hospital, St Colmcille’s Hospital, St James’s Hospital and our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children.

Two consultants hold professor positions, one affiliated with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the other with Trinity College, Dublin. Non consultant staff include 4 Specialist Registrars, 2 Surgical Registrars, 7 Senior House Officers and 1 Clinical Fellow Post.

1. Mr. Peter Barry

   Consultant Ophthalmologist
   Appointed: 1984
   Joint appointment with St. Vincent’s University Hospital.

   • Fellowship training: Wisconsin, Madison and Moorfield Eye Hospital, London
   • Special interests: Vitreoretinal surgery and cataract extraction with intraocular lens implant

2. Mr. Donal Brosnahan

   Consultant Ophthalmologist
   Appointed: 1999
   Appointed to the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin and Coombe Women’s Hospital.

   • Fellowship Training: Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London

3. Mr. Mark Cahill

4. Professor Lorraine Cassidy

   Joint appointment with the Adelaide and Meath Hospital incorporating the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght and Trinity College, Dublin.

   • Fellowship Training: The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London (Neuro-ophthalmology), Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London (Paediatric Surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology), The Western Eye Hospital, and Charing Cross Hospital, London (Ocuplastics)
   • Special Interests: Cataract Surgery, Thyroid Eye Disease, Endoscopic Lacrimal Surgery, Adnexal tumours and Neuro-ophthalmology

5. Dr. Denise Curtin

   Appointed: 1984
   Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital (11 sessions) and Portlaoise General Hospital.

   • Special Interests: Anterior Segment and Cataract surgery. Hospital representative on Irish College of Ophthalmologists Training Committee, Co-ordinator of the Ophthalmic Postgraduate Teaching Programme.

6. Ms. Aoife Doyle

   Consultant Ophthalmologist

   Joint Appointment with St James’s Hospital.

   • Fellowship Training: The Glaucoma Institute, Fondation Hôpital St Joseph, Paris.
   • Special Interests: Glaucoma, Medical and Surgical Management.Cataracts, trabeculectomy, deep sclerectomy, tubes, laser including selective laser trabeculoplasty
   • Research Interests: Biodegradeable drug delivery systems, New antifibrotic agents got glaucoma surgery, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT)

7. Mr. Noel Horgan

8. Mr. Dara Kilmartin

9. Mr. Paul Moriarty

10. Mr. Paul O'Brien

    Consultant Ophthalmologist
    Appointed: 2008
    

    • Sub-specialist corneal fellowship in Moorfields Eye Hospital, London (2007)
    • Special Interests: Cataract Surgery, Corneal Graft Surgery and Refractive Laser Eye Surgery
    • Main research interests includes the corneal endothelial cell layer and refractive outcomes following cataract surgery.

11. Mr. Martin O’Connor

    Consultant Ophthalmologist
    Appointed: 1986
    Joint appointment with St James’s Hospital.

12. Professor Conor Murphy

    Joint appointment: Professor of Ophthalmology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

    • Special interests: Corneal and external eye disease, ocular immunology, inflammatory eye disease, cataract surgery, medical education.
    • Research interests: Innate immunity of the ocular surface, herpetic eye disease, medical education.

13. Mr. William J Power

    Consultant Ophthalmologist
    Appointed: 1998
    Joint appointment with St Vincent’s University Hospital.

    • Fellowship Training: Massachussetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Boston (Immunology and Uveitis), Massachussetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School (Cornea and Laser Refractive Surgery)
    • Special Interests: Cataract and Corneal Surgery, Laser Refractive Surgery and Inflammatory Ocular Surface Diseases.

Outpatients Department

There are currently 25 consultant led clinics per week.

Subspecialty clinics include corneal clinic, glaucoma clinic, uveitis clinic, neurophthalmology clinic, ocuplastic and orbital clinic, paediatric clinic, strabismus clinic, contact lens clinic, retinal clinic, macular degeneration clinic and diabetic retinopathy screening clinic.

All clinics are staffed by a consultant and experienced Non Consultant Hospital Doctors. There are approximately 30,000 patient visits per year.

Theatre

The Hospital carries out by far the largest number of elective ophthalmic surgeries in the country. EMERGENCY THEATRE COVER is provided for 24 hours a day 365 days a year. There are three fully equipped dedicated ophthalmic theatres, with an average of twenty six theatre sessions per week.

In 2006 5,100 surgical procedures were performed. All theatres are fully equipped enabling surgeons carry out all forms of advanced intraocular microsurgery.
