It will also assist you with how to access our service and give you information on our G.P. Liaison Nurse Service your DIRECT LINK to the Accident and Emergency Department.(G.P. REFER A PATIENT

ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Accident and Emergency Department provides an EMERGENCY care service for Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat, Head and Neck (ENT-HN) conditions.

Referral form (ENT, Ophthalmology) must be completed and given to the patient to bring to A&E.

OPD Referrals should be FAXED (01 678 5462) OR POSTED. Please do not give OPD referral letters to patients as they often inadvertently end up attending the A&E department.

There is no age limit but some younger children may in some cases be better served in a paediatric setting. Contact the A&E department on the numbers provided below if in any doubt.

If you have concerns regarding a patient you wish to refer or who is already attending the A&E department, please contact the G.P. Liaison Nurse (Liaison Nurse Details) who will provide you with a direct link to an A&E doctor if necessary.

REFERRING TO THE OPD DEPARTMENT

The Out-Patient Department provides a secondary and tertiary care service for both Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology conditions. We provide a wide range of sub-specialty services for both(click to see list).

To assist us in managing the overwhelming demand for our service please consider the following before referring a patient to the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital:

• Is there an available service for the patient closer to home?(ENT_Services_Nationwide_Hospital_List, Community Ophthalmic_Practioner_Services_Nationwide, Ophthalmic_Services_Nationwide_Hospital_List)
• In some cases our waiting list for a routine OPD appointment is over 1 year, is it necessary for an OPD appointment for the patient or do you require advice from one of our specialists to enable you to treat the patient?
• Have you identified the sub-speciality clinic required, if yes, have you identified the most suitable Consultant to address the referral to? (view)
• Do you consider the patients clinical need to be URGENT or ROUTINE?

When referring a patient to the OPD please complete IN FULL the electronic referral form and FAX OR POST it to us using the contact details given below. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THE REFERRAL TO THE PATIENT TO DELIVER TO THE HOSPITAL. Referral form (ENT, Ophthalmology)

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CURRENT WAITING LIST FOR ROUTINE OPHTHALMOLOGY OUT-PATIENT APPOINTMENTS RANGE BETWEEN 11 MONTHS AND 14 MONTHS. THE CURRENT WAITING LIST FOR ROUTINE OTOLARYNGOLOGY OUT-PATIENT APPOINTMENTS RANGE FROM BETWEEN 12 MONTHS AND 15 MONTHS.

All patients (new & return) who DNA two consecutive OPD appointments will be removed from the outpatient waiting list and the referrer notified in writing. Authorisation to re-appoint or discharge rests with the consultant.(DNA POLICY)
