Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) assess, diagnose and provide a broad range of interventions and supports to people across the life span, with a variety of disorders and /or concerns regarding communication, voice, feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing’.

  • The Speech and Language Therapist at the Eye and Ear offers an assessment and treatment service primarily for adults who have swallowing or voice difficulties due to head and neck cancer problems.
  • As well as those (including children) with benign voice conditions.
  • People are seen in Outpatients, on the inpatient and day wards.
  • Those with longer term/ ongoing Speech and Language Therapy needs may be transferred to community teams.

 

Services provided

  • Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with disorders of speech, language, voice and swallowing
  • Patient and carer/family education and training
  • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) disorders
  • Digital stroboscopy assessment of voice disorders
  • Swallowing and communication management of patients with tracheostomy tubes
  • Management of patients post laryngectomy
  • Education and training to other health professionals
  • Education of Speech and Language students and clinical research

 

Referral information

Referral Procedure – if possible a red referral card (ref. FCT –SLT-001) available in all outpatient clinics (including ED) and should be completed by medical staff for outpatients.
With inpatients, a verbal handover by staff can be made with a telephone call, ext 5007.
Transfers from other hospitals are best made by emailing relevant information to: Carol.Glaister@rveeh.ie

 

Appointment attendances

Outpatient appointments

If you are an outpatient, you will receive an appointment directly from the Speech and Language Therapist.
On arrival at the Eye and Ear Hospital, go into the main entrance and up the stairs, then turn right and follow signs to ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) Outpatients. Please head for the ENT waiting area, letting the receptionist know that you have arrived. You will then be called for your appointment.

Cancelling your appointment.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please call the direct line 01 664 4645, leaving a message if noone is available to take your call, leaving your name and number and which appointment you need to cancel. If possible, please give us at least 24 hours’ notice. This will allow another patient on the waiting list to get an appointment.

If you have missed an appointment, please contact the department as soon as possible.

Student education

The Speech and Language Therapist is keen to support students in developing their clinical skills. Placements are organised through the Placement Educators at Trinity College Dublin only or via Human Resources.

Work Experience

Unfortunately, it is not possible to accommodate requests for work experience or shadowing opportunities
