Context and Service Description.

Job Purpose:

The Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) in Dublin was founded in 1897 and is the National Referral Centre for both Eye and Ear, Nose & Throat disorders. The hospital is a National Centre of Excellence providing tertiary and quaternary services in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and is the main tertiary provider for complex subspecialty eye disorders. Academic and clinical training are provided to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin. Research in both Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology is undertaken in partnership with our academic partners.

The sustainability services will be delivered at the hospital’s Adelaide Road site and are core to the hospital achieving its sustainability targets, as agreed by Council, and in line with national targets. This opportunity focuses on implementing the sustainability service delivery programme, reaching, and surpassing national targets and providing a reporting suite that meets both monthly KPIs and wider ESG annual reporting requirements.

Services Description

Energy and Facilities:

  • Develop sustainability guidelines for all capital projects.
  • Improve utilities monitoring systems.
  • Implement an ongoing programme of energy and water efficiency schemes.
  • Protect and enhance biodiversity at Adelaide Road.

Workforce:

  • Develop a sustainability engagement programme.
  • Staff engagement and enable them to adapt sustainability practices.

 Travel and Transport:

  • Develop Green Travel plan that facilitates active and sustainable travel options for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Maximise efficiencies in the transport of goods and services commissioned by the RVEEH.

Medicines:

  • Reduce and recycle medical devices.
  • Educate staff and encourage lower impact alternatives.
  • Identify carbon hotspots such as medical equipment and pharmaceuticals and mitigate environmental impacts.

Supply Chain and Procurement:

  • Regularly audit waste and follow up on issues identified.
  • Work innovatively with collaborators and suppliers on sustainable approaches.

Food, Waste and Nutrition:

  • Provide guidance on procuring food in line with our sustainable procurement objectives.
  • Review waste management effectiveness, appropriate waste disposal routes.
  • Develop and commit RVEEH to a Non-Plastic Pledge.

Health and Safety

  • Advise on improvements that are required.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, relatives, staff, and visitors in accordance with the obligations under the Health and Safety Legislation 2005
  • Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g. health and safety, infection control.

Quality, Risk and Patient Safety

  • Participate in the Hospital’s Accreditation Process and contribute to on-going monitoring, audit, and evaluation of the service as appropriate.
  • Participate in quality and patient safety improvement initiatives, as required.

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Essential:
    i. 3 Years plus of experience managing Sustainability projects.
    ii. Previous sustainability experience in a health care setting.
    iii. A relevant third- level degree in sustainability or similar.
  • Desirable:
    i. Deep understanding of Sustainability principles, frameworks, and Legislation.
    ii. Leadership and team management capabilities.
    iii. Ability to prepare sustainability reports for both local and group level updates.
  • Other Personal Attributes Required:
    i. Effective communication and people skills.
    ii. Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
